On September 4, French luxury leather artisan Hermès made a special stop in Shanghai, offering the Chinese audience a visually stunning experience that showcased the artistry and heritage of its exquisite leather craftsmanship. The exhibition, titled “Sewing Time,†marked the first stop of the global tour for Hermès’ leather goods showcase, inviting visitors to explore the deep connection between the brand and its most iconic material—leather.
“Leather has always been the foundation of Hermès. Even today, it remains our most distinguished partner,†said Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Global Creative Director of Hermès. “I hope this exhibition will allow people to appreciate the beautiful relationship between Hermès and leather. It’s a fascinating journey filled with surprises. Behind the playfulness and creativity, you’ll find simple yet profound answers that reflect the modern pursuit of timeless value.â€
At the opening reception, “Sewing Time†welcomed sixth-generation members of the Hermès leather family, as well as creative director Pierre-Alexis Dumas, who shared the legendary story of Hermès leather. Curator Olivier Saillard captivated the audience with his passionate insights, highlighting the timeless charm of art and leather coming together in perfect harmony. Attendees included Mr. Xu Yibo from the Luwan District Committee, Mr. Weng Zuliang, the Governor of Luwan District, Mr. Florian Craen, Managing Director of Hermès North Asia, and Mr. Lei Rongfa, President of Hermès China, all celebrating the successful launch of the exhibition.
Stepping into “Sewing Time†feels like embarking on a poetic and engaging journey. The “Leather Library†showcases an impressive collection of beautifully processed leathers, reflecting six generations of exploration and innovation. Leather bags displayed within elegant canvas frames highlight the quiet sophistication and enduring quality of the material. The “Changing Kelly and Perkins†section, arranged like a peacock’s tail, reveals the power of classic design reimagined through creativity. From vodka boxes and drums to violin cases and even bras designed by Jean Paul Gaultier for Hermès, these unique pieces embody the magic of “When Dreams Come True.†With eight distinct exhibition zones, the event presents a rich array of colored leather goods and iconic Hermès creations, each one a testament to the brand’s legacy.
As visitors wander through the exhibition, they can’t help but admire the ingenuity behind every piece. Simple tools like scissors and needles, arranged in a fan-like display, tell the story of the meticulous leatherworking techniques passed down from Parisian craftsmen. Live demonstrations of the “saddle stitch†and “beads and round jade run†techniques are both graceful and expressive, silently conveying Hermès’ reverence for tradition and its relentless pursuit of timeless craftsmanship.
“This exhibition is like a postcard from Paris, sharing the elegance and refined traditions of the French capital,†said Olivier Saillard. “‘Sewing Time’ isn’t just a collection—it’s a celebration of the brand’s legendary heritage.â€
At the leather goods exhibition, visitors are transported to Hermes House, where the legend of Hermès and leather comes to life. Since 1837, the brand has embodied timeless craftsmanship and creative vision, bringing the essence of Parisian elegance to China’s fashion capital. This exhibition marks another chapter in the brand’s legendary journey, continuing its story across the world.
