A New Star in Redwood: Rosewood
**A New Star in Redwood: Rosewood**
Rosewood, a rare and valuable hardwood, is mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions, with Southeast Asian countries being the primary producers. The wood exhibits a variety of colors, ranging from orange to light reddish brown and dark brown, with distinct patterns that add to its visual appeal. It has a glossy surface and emits a subtle sour or acidic scent. The grain is usually irregular and interlocked, making it durable and resistant to wear.

With spring approaching, many people are beginning their home decoration projects. When choosing furniture, many families now prefer mahogany, but there are numerous types of mahogany available. Today, we will focus on one specific type—suanzhi wood. According to Professor Yu Jiaan from Ming Heetang, there are several varieties of rosewood within the Dalbergia genus. Except for Hainan Island, which is known as Huanghua Pear, most Dalbergia species are referred to as "suanzhi" due to the vinegar-like aroma they emit during processing.
Rosewood is generally divided into three categories: black rosewood, red acid wood, and white rosewood. Each has unique characteristics. Black rosewood, considered the highest quality, has a deep purple to black color and a smooth finish. It is often mistaken for red sandalwood due to its similar appearance, though its texture tends to be coarser. Red rosewood has a more pronounced grain, typically straight, with a rich red hue. White rosewood, on the other hand, is lighter in color, resembling straw pear, and can sometimes be confused with other woods.
Ming Heetang's stores primarily stock red-branched wood, and according to the expert, suanzhi wood has been steadily increasing in value by about 15% annually. Most of the furniture in the store falls into the mid-range category. However, the market is flooded with products labeled as "rosewood," some of which are actually black wood from the Dalbergia genus. Even experienced experts find it challenging to distinguish between them, and collectors often struggle as well. In recent years, some imported high-quality wood was mistakenly believed to be red sandalwood, but further research revealed it to be a different type of Dalbergia wood. Despite this, these woods are still highly regarded for their durability and aesthetic value.
**Sleeping on Red Sandalwood**
Known as the "gold of wood" due to its rarity and value, red sandalwood has long been cherished for its health benefits. Actor Chi Zhongrui once mentioned in a program that rubbing red sandalwood chips releases "wood oxygen," which not only helps calm the mind but also promotes cell regeneration and prevents wrinkles. Sleeping on a red sandalwood bed is said to help maintain youthful skin and improve sleep quality.
Additionally, red sandalwood has natural mosquito-repelling properties, making it ideal for summer use. Traditional artisans often polish the wood with valerian, a plant known for its cooling and detoxifying effects. This process enhances the wood’s ability to release beneficial compounds, promoting circulation and overall well-being.
**Sitting on Suanzhi Wood**
Suanzhi wood is not only beautiful but also practical. It offers good heat dissipation and air permeability, with a mild fragrance that refreshes the senses. Its strength makes it suitable for tables and chairs. When freshly cut, the heartwood is reddish, and over time, it darkens and becomes more lustrous. Although it belongs to the broader category of red sandalwood, it is distinct from traditional red sandalwood. Known for its elegant grain and resistance to decay, suanzhi wood holds a special place in classical Chinese interiors and is considered a top-tier choice among mahogany.
After the Ming and Qing dynasties, especially during the Qianlong era, suanzhi wood became highly valued. Many historical dramas today feature furniture made from this wood, reflecting its cultural significance. Historically, it was praised for its comfort—neither too hard nor too cold, and it provided support for the lower back, making it an ideal material for chairs.
**Using Chicken Wing Wood for Utensils**
For tea tables, tea sets, and dining bowls, chicken wing wood is often preferred. This wood is rarer than ebony and rosewood and is particularly popular in writing rooms, where its refined appearance adds a cultural touch. Many people choose it for tea sets because when exposed to hot water, it releases a natural, refreshing aroma. Its flexibility and water resistance make it perfect for making tea-related items.
Ebony chopsticks, black boxes, and small decorative items are commonly crafted from ebony. Among these, ebony chopsticks are the most valuable, known for their durability, elegance, and smooth texture.
**Choosing Ebony for Decorations**
While rosewood and incense wood have pleasant fragrances that benefit both body and mind, ebony is particularly suited for certain furnishings. Unlike other woods, ebony refers to a group of trees that have been buried underground for centuries, gradually carbonizing over time. This process gives it excellent deodorizing properties, helping to purify the air and absorb harmful substances.
Ancient officials favored ebony furniture for its spiritual cleansing qualities, believing it could ward off evil spirits. In China, there is a saying, “A box of jewelry is not as valuable as a piece of ebony.†Some even used ebony for coffins due to its anti-corrosive and purifying properties.
Red sandalwood is light and fragrant, making it ideal for wardrobes. In ancient times, the wealthy often chose it for their clothing storage. A red sandalwood closet not only keeps clothes fresh and sterile but also fills the room with a pleasant scent.
