The classic collared shirt is a staple piece for countless women. Its timeless design works across nearly every season and can be styled in countless ways—whether worn alone or layered for a polished look. Despite its versatility, finding the perfect shirt can be quite challenging. Achieving the ideal fit, color, and fabric often feels near impossible, which is precisely why sewing your own shirt can be so rewarding. That’s what inspired me to create our latest Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt pattern.
I’ve always emphasized the importance of building a core wardrobe, and this pattern embodies that philosophy. While there are many shirt patterns available, I felt compelled to design one that truly meets those essential needs. Over the years, I’ve focused on creating versatile pieces that seamlessly integrate into your everyday wardrobe. Until now, however, I hadn’t offered a classic collared shirt—something I knew was missing and something you’ve been asking for!
But there are several compelling reasons why this pattern stands out:
First, it comes in cup sizes! I’ve already handled the full bust adjustment for you, offering front pattern pieces in A/B, C, and D cup sizes. Simply select the option that suits you best and you’re ready to begin. I’ll walk you through adjusting the darts in an upcoming tutorial to ensure a tailored fit, but the groundwork has already been laid for a great outcome.
Secondly, the pattern features a two-piece collar—a detail many of you have been requesting for years. Our Gallery Tunic + Dress pattern includes a one-piece collar, which is straightforward to sew, but nothing compares to the classic collarband and collar of this shirt. The pattern also includes a separate collar facing to achieve crisp, professional-looking results.
Third, the sewing instructions are meticulously crafted with detailed illustrations to guide you through the process effortlessly. I conducted extensive research to compile the best tips and tricks, ensuring you achieve excellent results with minimal effort. As always, we break it down step-by-step so you won’t feel overwhelmed.
Another highlight is the classic sleeve cuff and tower placket, reminiscent of high-quality shirts. You can even experiment by incorporating a contrasting fabric for the underside of the placket, adding a touch of personality, as shown in the accompanying image. The cuff also includes a separate facing for optimal fit, allowing room for creative touches like contrast fabrics.
The pattern offers two distinct pocket styles: a traditional workshirt pocket and a safari-inspired pleated pocket with a flap and hidden button—details that elevate the design. You can even combine these elements to suit your preference, giving you multiple styling options from one pattern.
Additionally, the pattern includes a lengthen and shorten line, allowing you to customize the shirt to your desired length. Coming soon, we’ll be sharing tutorials and blog posts to help you further tailor the pattern. These resources will cover a sew-along with photos, techniques for side gussets, machine bartacks, and faux flat-felled seams, as well as a free pussy bow pattern for added femininity. I’ll also provide fabric suggestions and styling ideas, along with additional enhancements to maximize the pattern’s versatility.
And here’s a sneak peek: our fall release will include something extra special to help you get even more mileage out of this pattern. Stay tuned for the surprise!
The Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt pattern will launch next Tuesday morning on our website in both paper and digital formats. In the meantime, check out the pattern pages to review sizing and fabric requirements to plan accordingly. If you’d like, leave your email on the product page for the version you prefer, and we’ll notify you as soon as it’s available for purchase.
As always, I’m excited to share this project with you and help you craft a timeless piece that fits perfectly and reflects your personal style. Let’s get sewing!
