This Halloween, my preteen daughter had an idea to dress up as a Greek goddess, and I immediately thought the Marais Knit Dress + Top pattern would be perfect with just a few tweaks. Since she’s still growing, I chose the larger size to accommodate her between sizes, though I could have easily gone up another size. The bodice required no changes at all, and I used a beautiful woven white fabric to create the dress.
To give the dress a more flowing, goddess-like look, I decided to modify the skirt. I cut vertical slits every 1 ½ inches from the hem and spread them apart by an inch, which added some subtle gathers to both the front and back pieces. Additionally, I extended the skirt by two inches to make it more dramatic.
Adding the ribbon detail to the bodice was my favorite part. After attaching the skirt to the bodice according to the pattern instructions, I gently pressed the ribbon into a gentle curve using a lower heat setting on my iron. This technique stretched the ribbon slightly on one side, allowing it to follow the natural curve of the bodice beautifully. Once I had it positioned where I wanted it, I carefully pinned it to the bottom of the bodice, making sure not to include the skirt portion. I then stitched along both the top and bottom edges of the ribbon, ensuring it stayed securely in place. Finally, I sewed the front and back bodice pieces together, capturing the ribbon neatly within the side seams.
The entire process was incredibly enjoyable and straightforward. What surprised me most was how adaptable the Marais pattern turned out to be. My daughter loves the finished dress, saying it feels as comfortable as it looks, and she even plans to wear it during the summer months. Whether you’re working with knits or woven fabrics, this pattern truly offers endless possibilities.
I’ve always been a fan of patterns that can adapt to different styles, and this one exceeded my expectations. The final result was something my daughter felt proud of, and I couldn’t have been happier with how it all came together. It’s not often you find a sewing project that’s both simple and stunning, but this one definitely qualifies.
As someone who enjoys experimenting with different materials, I’m already brainstorming ways to use this pattern again. Who knows? Maybe next time, I’ll try a completely different fabric or color scheme. Either way, it’s clear this dress has become a favorite in our household, and I’m excited to see what future projects hold.
