This Halloween, my preteen daughter had an idea to dress up as a Greek goddess, and it turned out to be a fantastic opportunity for me to flex my sewing muscles. The moment she mentioned it, I knew exactly which pattern would work perfectly — the Marais Knit Dress + Top. With just a few tweaks, this pattern proved incredibly adaptable.
I decided to use a woven white fabric instead of the recommended knit material. To my delight, there was no need to change much of the original design. The bodice required absolutely no adjustments at all. Since my daughter falls between two bust sizes, I chose the larger option, though I could’ve easily gone up another size without issue. It fit her beautifully as-is.
The only significant modification I made was to the skirt. I sliced the pattern vertically from the hem every 1.5 inches and spread them apart by 1 inch to create more width. This gave the skirt a subtle gathered look, adding a touch of flair to both the front and back panels. Additionally, I extended the length of the skirt by 2 inches to give it a more flowing appearance.
Adding the ribbon detail to the bodice was another creative touch. Following the instructions, I attached the skirt to the bodice first. Next, I carefully curved the ribbon to match the outline of the bust line, adjusting my iron's heat setting to avoid damaging the ribbon, which wasn’t made of cotton. Curving the ribbon stretched it slightly on one side while keeping the other side firm, resulting in a graceful arc. After pressing it into place, I pinned the ribbon along the bottom of the bodice pieces (excluding the skirt) and stitched along its edges. Finally, I joined the front and back bodice sections together, ensuring the ribbon stayed neatly tucked inside the side seams.
Overall, this project was a joy to complete. The versatility of the Marais Knit Dress + Top became evident during the process, and my daughter loves how comfortable the final dress feels. She even mentioned wanting to wear it again next summer! Whether made from knit or woven fabrics, this pattern consistently delivers excellent results.
