A while back, I had the chance to create a Butterfly Blouse and Skirt set using some fresh fabrics from Windham. Over the last twenty years, Windham has primarily focused on quilting cottons, but recently they've expanded their offerings to include clothing-weight materials like linen, lawn, jersey, and corduroy. I was lucky enough to get my hands on some adorable new fabrics in cotton lawn and corduroy, both of which will hit store shelves starting August 2015.
For this project, I worked with fabrics from two distinct collections. The first is Tiger Lily, designed by the renowned Heather Ross. Known for her whimsical prints centered around childhood themes, Heather's Tiger Lily collection features playful woodland scenes, flowers, cats, ballerinas, and butterflies. Fans of her earlier collections, Far Far Away and Briar Rose, will likely adore Tiger Lily as well. It includes 23 fabrics in cotton and five in cotton lawn.
I crafted a Butterfly blouse using a cheerful yellow cotton lawn adorned with multicolored butterflies. The scale of the pattern and the drape of the fabric worked beautifully together, making it a perfect match for the blouse. Additionally, this blouse pairs wonderfully with other Oliver + S patterns. In this case, I paired it with a khaki Badminton Skort, and I think they complement each other splendidly.
The only minor tweak I made to the blouse was substituting the thread chain button loop with thin elastic cord. This close-up shot offers a closer look at the delightful butterfly motifs throughout the fabric.
Moving on to the second collection, I worked with Stella, designed by the beloved Lotta Jansdotter. Known for her Scandinavian aesthetic, Lotta's Stella prints feature stars, elephants, and butterflies in soft pastel tones of pink, purple, grey, celadon, and blue. The designs are characterized by their simplicity, cleanliness, and modern flair. The Stella collection comprises 13 fabrics in quilting cotton and four in corduroy.
I created a Butterfly skirt using a fine wale corduroy that features pewter with white stars. I believe most Oliver + S skirts, pants, and jackets would turn out beautifully using this fine wale corduroy.
One of the great things about this corduroy is how the pleats remain crisp and well-defined without needing to be ironed. Here, the skirt is paired with a long-sleeve white t-shirt, creating a ready-to-wear look. Alternatively, you could achieve a similar appearance with the School Bus T-shirt.
Several pattern testers experimented with the Butterfly pattern, showcasing its versatility across various sizes, from toddlers to tweens. Let’s explore their creations, starting from the smallest sizes.
Ashley and Emily from Frances Suzanne have been quite productive, sewing up a few Butterfly outfits. One notable creation is their "toothbrush outfit," named so because the blouse fabric resembles toothbrushes. This outfit features a 12-18 month peach skirt paired with a 2T blouse, with lined sleeves and added piping.
Next, they crafted a St. Patrick’s Day outfit using a home decor floral fabric for the 2T skirt and a green blouse in size 4T.
Another delightful creation came in soft pastel hues.
Sarvi sewed three garments in size 5. For the blouse, she used an embroidered silk scarf gifted by her aunt from India.
Her first Butterfly skirt was made from Kaufman chambray.
Her second Butterfly skirt was crafted from a different Kaufman chambray and styled as a mini-skirt, hitting a few inches above the knee. She also added lace to the hem.
Johanna’s daughter is wearing a size 8 ensemble. The blouse is made from an Anna Maria Horner voile, while the skirt is a chambray-like cross-weave linen.
Jeanne sewed a tween version, with the blouse in Nani Iro double gauze and the skirt in sateen cotton from the Filagree collection by Art Gallery Fabrics.
During Kids Clothes Week, several more stunning Butterfly examples emerged. One knitter managed to sew four floral Butterfly Blouses in size 5 over the past week! These blouses come in teal and red.
Her floral blouses in blue and brown look charming with matching bow hair ties.
Ana Sofia crafted a beautiful blouse in Liberty D’Anjo tana lawn in Size 7.
She also made a skirt in Robert Kaufman Chambray in Indigo, in Size 6. You can find more details about this ensemble on her blog.
Isn’t it fascinating how the same pattern can transform into such unique styles? Keep an eye on the Flickr group, where many more adorable outfits are sure to surface in the coming weeks.
