butterfly blouse + skirt round-up

A while back, I had the chance to create a Butterfly Blouse and Skirt set using some fresh fabrics from Windham. Over the last twenty years, Windham Fabrics has primarily focused on quilting cottons, but recently they've expanded into apparel-weight materials such as linen, lawn, jersey, and corduroy. I was lucky enough to test out a couple of their new fabrics—cotton lawn and corduroy—both of which will hit stores starting August 2015. I worked with fabrics from two distinct collections. The first is called Tiger Lily, designed by Heather Ross. Known for her whimsical prints centered around childhood themes, her work often features playful illustrations. Tiger Lily continues this trend with designs that include woodland frolics, flowers, cats, ballerinas, and butterflies. If you enjoyed her earlier collections, Far Far Away and Briar Rose, you'll likely love Tiger Lily too. It includes 23 fabrics in cotton and five in cotton lawn. For my Butterfly blouse, I chose a cheerful yellow cotton lawn with multicolored butterflies. The scale of the print worked beautifully with the pattern, and the fabric draped wonderfully. The blouse pairs nicely with other Oliver + S patterns, as shown here where I combined it with a khaki Badminton Skort. I did make one small adjustment to the blouse: instead of using a thread chain button loop, I opted for thin elastic cord. This close-up image lets you get a better look at all those adorable little butterflies. The second collection I worked with is Stella, designed by Lotta Jansdotter. Renowned for her Scandinavian aesthetic, Stella features stars, elephants, and butterflies in soft pastel tones like pink, purple, gray, celadon, and blue. The collection consists of 13 fabrics in quilting cotton and four in corduroy. I created a Butterfly skirt using fine wale corduroy in pewter with white stars. Most Oliver + S skirts, pants, and jackets would likely turn out great in this corduroy. With this material, the pleats stayed crisp without needing to be ironed. Paired with a long-sleeve white t-shirt, it's already a polished look, but you could mimic it with the School Bus T-shirt. Several pattern testers crafted garments from the Butterfly pattern, showcasing its versatility across various sizes, from toddler to tween. Let’s go through them in order from smallest to largest. Ashley and Emily from Frances Suzanne have been busy sewing up a few Butterfly outfits. Their “toothbrush outfit,” named for the blouse fabric resembling toothbrushes, features a 12-18 month peach skirt paired with a 2T blouse. They lined the sleeves and added piping for extra flair. Next is their St. Patrick’s Day outfit, featuring a home decor floral fabric for the 2T skirt paired with a 4T green blouse. Lastly, another set in pastel hues. Sarvi sewed three garments in size 5. For the blouse, she used an embroidered silk scarf her aunt brought from India. Her first Butterfly skirt was made from Kaufman chambray. Her second skirt, also in Kaufman chambray, is shorter, hitting a few inches above the knee, with lace added to the hem. Johanna’s daughter is wearing a size 8 ensemble. The blouse is made from Anna Maria Horner voile, and the skirt is a chambray-like cross-weave linen. Jeanne sewed a tween version with the blouse in Nani Iro double gauze and the skirt in sateen cotton from the Filagree collection by Art Gallery Fabrics. During Kids Clothes Week, there were more stunning Butterfly creations. One knitter busied herself sewing four floral Butterfly Blouses in size 5 this week! These are in teal and red. Her blue and brown floral blouses look charming with matching bow hair ties. Ana Sofia crafted a beautiful blouse in Liberty D’Anjo tana lawn in Size 7. She also made a skirt in Robert Kaufman Chambray in Indigo, Size 6. You can read more about this ensemble on her blog. Isn’t it fascinating how the same pattern can look so different depending on the fabric? Keep an eye on the Flickr group where more darling outfits are sure to pop up in the coming weeks.
